Mieko Dream

Mieko Dream

I went to a costume party--one of those cos-play events.
I dressed like a samuri--one of those hi-tech fighters.
Underneath, I was Japanese.
I did not know anyone, so I was a stranger.
Understandably, Mieko was meek, unsure, but not afraid.
She sat next to me.
Full length, bodies touching, our fingers surreptitiously entwined.
We rode the train: Sedora as chaperon, Mieko and me silent.
Another event, we met again.
And then for Halloween, where I took off my disguise...
Both of them...
Revealing a ganjin, a foreigner.
Will our love survive?
