Along with all the other changes, a magical utility concession has come to town, which collects all of the free floating magic--a.k.a. manna--with artificial dragon shaped constructs. Ruby is fascinated by these constructs and wants to meet one. Eventually, with the help of her friends in the Under Belly Society she does. And what do you know, just as soon as Ruby meets a construct, it comes to life as our friend Grt, a lovable little drag-goon. Of course Grt follows Ruby home, and that's when the real fun begins. You see, Grt is The Dragon's property, and as The Dragon doesn't believe in just giving things away, one of his representatives soon presents Ruby with a bill for something like a million-billion-gazillion in gold for services rendered. And just to make sure Ruby doesn't forget about paying the bill, he has a countdown clock of doom permanently strung around her neck. If Ruby reaches eighteen before paying the bill, The Dragon will eat her... or whatever it is that dragons do with little girls. On the other hand, if Ruby does somehow manage to pay the bill, she will become co-ruler of the Seven Realms. All in all, it would be a pretty good deal if the bill weren't so large. Even The Dragon doesn't have a million-billion-gazillion in gold, so things look sort of hopeless, but Ruby isn't the sort of girl to simply lay down and die, and when you get right down to it, that's why The Dragon chose her in the first place. The rest of the book is a madcap adventure consisting of delightfully fun, wholesome encounters suitable for the entire family that take place in the form of a linear quest as Ruby tries to learn more about The Dragon, the many worlds of Mt. Doom, and exactly how one might go about paying off a ridiculously large utility bill before the clock around her neck ticks down to zero and it is all too late.
