FILE: Carl Jung Notes ARCHIVED: 2021-08-27 (c) Copyright Brett Paufler # # # # # # I listened to a few audio books and lectures regarding Carl Jung. And I think I have had enough with the subject, as it does not mesh enough with my understanding of The Brain. Brain -> Subsystems That's all fine enough. And I'm even good with The God of War being an Archetype and/or Subsystem. But Anima, Animus, and Shadow are not only named very (very-very) poorly, they also provide little guidance... to me, at least. So, bail. If I am to study The Mind, I will start with the raw material... and/or a better tour guide. # # # # # # Carl Jung Raw Notes # # # # # # Carl Jung 2021-07-24 Rather than muddy my other files, I will start a Jung Specific File: This One. Carl Jung: The Undiscovered Self - note file starts at 1:54/2:34 of this Audio Book. The idea which necessitated the start of a file (it was at least going to be a note): The Conscious Mind is built atop The Unconscious Mind (aka Instinct). I presume expressions of the later are what are meant by Archetypes. DISCLAIMER (for this, book reviews, and all similar projects): The primary intent is to share MY Thought Process. This is my reaction/relation to Jung. Jung takes second seat. I'm not tying to paraphrase Jung. But rather, ME in MY RELATION to MY IMPRESSION of Jung. Me -> Me -> Me -> Jung DISCLAIMER: Thus, if one's primary interest is Jung, one is probably, most likely, and/or most definitely best served by looking elsewhere. Might I suggest Jung. He did a lot of writing, you know. Any direct quotes, I will seek to enclose: "". But, you know, it's an audio book. So, give me a break. Burning Man -> EDM Festivals -> PsyTrance Music -> / Philosophy -> Alan Watts -> / // -> McKenna -> Psychedelics -> DMT -> Psychic Worlds -> Jung Jordan Peterson (an obvious devotee) -> Jung ->: Tracing Influences. Why Jung? Is my Collapsing (as opposed to Branching) Tree Syntax clear? I have a hunch DMT Entities can be described/explained in terms of Archetypes. Of course, I'm really not positive my interpretation of "Archetype" is spot-on. Do. Don't Do. The Two Pathways in The Brain. Thus, perhaps, introducing, an alternate way of looking at Shadow, assuming that's what we are talking about. Shadow: Will to Evil - (Un)Acted Upon Evil Inside - Polar Opposite of Conscience and/or The Super Ego DISCLAIMER: Let me just say I think the next is way more Me-Me-Me-Me than anything having to do with Jung. And I don't intend to bother labelling such divergences (nothing much to do with Jung except listening to or thinking about his words at the time) in the future. Animal -> Man -> Uber Man (and not as it might refer to a consumer of certain transportation mediation services) For me, Uber Man equals Moral Man or Transcendent Man. So, condensed: Animal -> Spirit Which begs the question: if The Sixth Dimension and/or a Spirit World does not (and/or did not) exist, can Man create it? Can The Universe be added to and/or increased in scope? Or more fundamentally, is The Universe static in scope? Must it be? 2021-07-25: Carl Jung - The Structure Of The Psyche All thought arises in the subconscious. Dreams within Dreams. I do not like Case Histories. There is always the exception which proves the rule, leaving one wondering whether they are being presented with a carefully chosen exception or the rule. Also, it's possible to model, express, and/or interpret the same data in different ways. I can't remember ever dreaming about a snake. LeeZards, very infrequently. Maybe, only the once. Maybe, I am making that up. But snakes? Not a once. Or at least, nothing comes to mind. Did I hear that right? It was the prerogative of the church (there must have been at least one, sometime, someplace that did this, right) to start all new fires from which (presumably) coals would be distributed. Jung: Consciousness Personal Unconscious Collective Unconscious Man, I've never consciously forgotten anything. Concentrate until it is gone? Not a chance. Purposefully look away? With my neurotic tendencies? Not a chance. I do not like this book as well as the first. Also, I think Collective Unconscious is a crappy name for Residual Instinct or Hormonal Subsystems. Yeah, I still don't know the difference between Personal & Collective Unconscious. He just said Instinct and The Archetypes were included in Personal {Unconsciousness}. Of course, he might not really know the difference either. Of course, it could be Collective {Unconsciousness} is to Class as Personal {Unconsciousness} is to Instance. In truth, I did not appreciate this last book as much as the first. During the first, I had desires to reread (i.e. listen to) it again. Whereas, I felt like cutting the second short a time or two. 2021-07-27: Carl Jung - The Personal And The Collective Unconscious Jung: Transference (of authority to the psychoanalyst) tends to end when the patient runs out of money. Dream Interpretations as a Class fail miserably. Nothing Jung says changes my mind in this regard. For any claim of Transference, I would first wish to rule out any Wish Fulfilment on the part of The Therapist. That a Person in Power or Authority is being treated as a Person in Power or Authority is not surprising. Oh, right. I pretty much devalue the whole of Freud's Work. I restrain myself from calling him an idiot. But I find no guidance (absolutely none) in his ideas. {And at this point, none in Jung's Work, either. Subsystems? Fine. Subsystems as named by Jung. Meaningless.} The Brain has Sub-Systems. To any but a Sophist {Die Hard Contrarian}, this is incontrovertible. It seems Jung may have some insights in this regard. This is my interest. Any derivative of Freud's Work is not. 18:28/24:03: Life is too short to finish this one. 2021-07-29: Carl Jung - The Transcendent Function (53:18) Thirty seconds in (so, just barely introducing the subject) and I am beginning to wonder if Jung wasn't making things more complicated than they needed to be. I do not put much value in so-called Freudian Slips. Mistakes happen. Some are more interesting than others. However, liars seldom blurt out the truth by mistake. Jung: There is no cure. Even the physician cannot heal thyself. Of course, being with myself 24/7 (not to mention, being highly interested in the subject), I am the pre-eminent authority on myself. A Doctor may know ideas, averages, and even possible outcomes. But I know myself; and therefore, which courses are more likely to lead to the desired outcomes... this last, also, being something I must decide. I am the start, finish, and all stages in-between. I'm working on a LEGO Castle as I listen. So, I'm not completely attending. But I do not agree with the theory as stated. I see The Conscious as an Executive Function; and as such, only needs an Executive Summary. More information (a wider, more verbose interface) would only slow things down. Are you going to trust your eyes or not? How about, feelings? Memories? Emotions? Sure, much is discoverable. But much is not... nor is it needed to be and/or has needed to be. Instincts? Adaptive? Or It Depends. I take it back. A Computer with Full Access to everything is far more likely to go insane... but also, far more likely to achieve greatness. So, lack of access (limited to The Executive Summary) is The Safe Road... a Good Compromise. Still, let's swing for the fences. I take Depression to be a common outcome when a Chronic or Acute Stressor leads to Catastrophic Loss or Failure. Depression: Symptomatic Diagnosis of a Chronic Maladaptive Hyper-Adrenaline Response: i.e. too much adrenaline too often for too long of a time Stressor: Anything & Everything that requires Effort. Pain. Fear. Everything & Anything which leads to a Fight or Flight Response. Catastrophic: Subjective Reporting Confounds Definitive Description. Some Mountains are Mole Hills and vice-a-versa. Sometimes, it's just life, fate, and/or bum luck and/or genetics at work. Meaning, it's so vague as to be meaningless... found wherever it is wanted. The Audio is becoming increasingly easy to ignore. Jung: "This sometimes leads patients to fancy themselves artists." Transcendent_Function(?: Veracity Unknown): Conscious/Subconscious Communication 2021-07-30: Carl Jung - Phenomenology Of The Self (42:43) 0:49: I have a desire to end this project. Am I learning anything important? Jung's Schema {aka Jung's Jargon Filled Construct}, sure. But do I respect his schema? Can I use it as a stepping stone? Anima: Goddess - All Mother Animus: All Father Maybe, I am done. It is so much a private nomenclature, leading to a psychic world-view which does not conform to my preconceptions; and hence, what I have seen 25:19: Bail. My conception is more: Neurons -> Circuits -> SubSystems With the later possibly resolving into Entities; and at a greater level, Archetypes. Theses latter two implying some degree of autonomy and will {in the SubFunction}. 2021-08-05: Carl Jung and the Archetypes - [Redacted - As That's The Kind of Guy I Am] Sorry, I will not be using honorifics for others until I am granted one myself... other than 'Deacon Blue', but of course. Depth Psychology: I know not what the term formally means. But since it would appear Jung is included in the class, I have (what I like to think is) a good guess. And now, can I remember the note, which caused me to formally list this lecture? Archetype: A Common Psychological Pattern. Clearly, Physiological Sub-Systems are indicated, as are Derivative Behaviours. I would separate out Culture; but then, that's easier said than done. Complex Psychological Patterns can take on the appearance of An Other: aka An Entity. DISCLAIMER: As with all the others (videos before and/or similar projects), the video presents a basis from which my comments arise, but by no means {do my comments} seek to represent: i.e. these are my opinions, thoughts, conclusions, summations, and guesses. It is for a richer understanding of these Entities that I seek. So, for me (at least, for now), Archetype = Entity. There is no True Self. Good lecture. I am enjoying. It packs a lot of information and may well kill Jung as a topic for me. DISCLAIMER: The Lecture summarizes an interpretation of Jung's Work, while I'm summarizing MY relevant thoughts, as come to mind while listening to the lecture. Symbolism may be intrinsic to The Universe. And it would be cool if it was. But I doubt a word-association based Simplistic Symbolism has much power. No. I guess if one believes a symbolism, then that symbolism has a power for that individual; and The Universe is as likely to respect that symbolism as much as any. But if there is one Symbolism to rule them all, I doubt it follows rules of simplistic reduction. I am just thinking out loud, here. Highly tangential to The lecture. Math != math Symbolism != symbolism I like playing with The Universe. But that doesn't mean The Universe is playing with me, that I know The Rules, or even the nature of The Game. Or how's this? I do not believe Comic Book Super Heroes are particularly heroic or that a desire for heroism drives the {comic book} market. Honor is a prerequisite for Heroism. I was not taken with his foray into the world of Super Heroes. On the other hand, more of the jargon is coalescing. Class is to Instance as Archetype is to Archetypical Image. Anima: Female Force Animus: Male Force Shadow: The Superego's Mirror Image 2021-08-07: Depth Psychology How well do you know yourself? How far can you see into your own Unconscious? Subconscious -> Psychodynamics -> Depth Psychology Depth Psychology: How an Atheist searches for what others might call a Soul. 2021-08-22 Do I wish to learn about Depth Psychology? Do I wish to keep notes? Do I wish to use the same note file? Questions. Questions. Questions. Time does pass by. I was playing CIV for some portion in there. The Game is a time sink. 2021-08-23 I will call this done. Jung does not go down paths I care about. I'd rather have The Entities introduce themselves. #EOF
