I hope I have both this Island and a nearby one to myself, so I can develop in peace and pop a lot of Huts. # # # T35: I am on an Isolated Island. Hopefully, there is more land within Galley reach. # # # 2019-10-02 2440BC T106 I'm thinking I'm going to reload. Actually, although I have a great first City, the Second City is not looking so good. I certainly misplaced it. So, a reload. Sorry, folks. # # # 2019-10-04 I think I have decided on the Map I will replay... after countless rerolls. Also, I believe I will be Building The Great Lighthouse... or at least, going for it. # # # 2019-10-04 1750BC T175 This is the first day of play of the Second Game and my first write-up. I've sort of changed my mind about the Wonders. Tokyo has built The Great Lighthouse and will start work on The Pyramids shortly. I may also go for The Colossus. But I question it's importance. I am not working many sea tiles. Actually, The Pyramids may be a waste. But then, that Happiness boost from Monarchy or Representation may pay for itself. Yeah, I'll build The Pyramids. There just isn't that much else to build at this stage in the game. I am isolated again. But the island is better. The resources really are stacked high. I just switched from Researching Metal Casting to Iron Working, the better to Settle my Cities from here on out. Food will be the limiting factor. I will need to build farms. # # # 2019-10-05 1480BC T201 I have tons of Copper, Iron, Stone, and Marble. First, I should rethink my Wonder Strategy. Second, if the game lasts that long, Mining or Creative Construction will be very powerful. At present, I am beelining Optics. I believe their will be empty islands the size of my own for the Settling, making this the best play of the game. I haven't dot mapped my island for City placement. I hardly ever do. But I think I've got a fairly good idea on the next two or three... and see one all the way at the tip. I will do the circumference first; and then, infill one or two. # # # 2019-10-05 1480BC T202 I lost the race for The Pyramids. Truthfully, this is turning into a wonderful map for a Wonder Builder... or maybe not. With all that Stone and Marble, perhaps there is more interest in Wonders than normal. Either way, I am bailing on the game. The single island start is hardly compelling, even if it is a nice island. # # # # # # The Third Try # # # # # # 2019-10-05 3475BC T35 I underestimated the power of my starting location: 2 Elephants 1/3/1 3 Floodplain Hills 3/4/1 + Copper? + Iron? # # # 2019-10-05 2935BC T71 I have decided to hold off Founding my Second City until after I get Iron Working. Yes, it's a long way off. And I may have 2-4 Settlers ready to go at that time. But I want to know where my Copper and Iron is so as to maximize my Cities. At which point, I'll Dot Map my little island. There may be other islands I can connect to. But revealing them will require Settling Cities in the right place. I can wait. No hurry. Though, that makes the Second City 100+ Turns out. # # # 2019-10-05 1500BC T200 I am Researching Writing for Libraries and their +2 Culture. I have Five Cities. And my next City will be in the Far Northern Islands for the Off Continent Trade Bonus. The first City or two up there should pay for itself (or themselves), requiring no reduction in the slider. After Writing, I will be Researching Metal Casting for The Colossus. I did not think I would be. But Water Tiles are going to be very important... so important, I may just reload again if I miss out on The Colossus. At this point, it is critical. I am giving a pass to The Pyramids, however. If I nail The Colossus, however, things are looking good... not great... but a solid good. I will be Chopping Forests if that's what it takes to get my Libraries up and running in a reasonable amount of time. I hope my Cities to the North reveal new lands {presumably, this would happen on the Culture Pop}. Of course, that's an off balancing advantage. But what are you going to do. At this point, it's a known weakness of the map. # # # T201: I am the Third Largest Civilization. I intend to push that way up. # # # T204: I discovered Writing and placed Libraries in all my queues, moving it ahead of a Lighthouse in many. # # # 2019-10-05 1000BC T250 ALT+M creates a custom Message in X turns. I set one to let me know to change my Worked Tiles in Big Phant (the capitol) in four Turns. Let's see if it works. If I miss The Colossus by 7 Turns, that's on me. I did not start working on the Forge prerequisite in a timely manner. Rather than Researching Code of Laws for Confucianism and Courthouse, I'm going the Optics route, picking up Compass first. That will give me Harbours and +50% Trade Route Yield, which synergizes nicely with The Great Lighthouse. I might have Optics by T350. Well, perhaps not that quick. But it will be early... very early. Even if I don't get The Colossus, it won't make a difference. I will get 2x Hammers in Fail Gold, which will likely be every bit as good, enabling me to run Research at 100% for that many Turns. Also, with Optics, I'll be able to Research my backfill Techs faster, as more folks will know them. I will get all the joint knowledge bonuses. So, I think Optics is a definite goer. I'm not so sure about Astronomy... especially prior to building up my infrastructure. On the other hand, let us assume there is an island for the taking. Now, that is a prize. # # # 2019-10-06 990BC T251 I am last place in Power, which is not surprising, as I have a grand total of 2 Warriors. That will change. # # # T270: The Colossus was built in a far away land. I'm a bit bummed. But it was more than the 7 Turns. I would have had to Chop like a madman to get it. # # # T278: I am Settling my Great Merchant. Let us assume I will be the Tech Leader and nail Economics. For the present, he equates to +10% on the Slider. # # # 2019-10-06 500BC T300 If I do not do well and I wish to play this type of Map again, I will start with a Wonder focused Leader. Also, I will give greater weight to Gold or Gems, as I've not a single Happiness Resource. I'm 40 Turns away from Optics, which is insanely early: T350 or so. I should be able to backfill nicely with the Known Tech Modifier... and the fact that I will be researching cheaper Techs than I am now. Of course, if I am going for Astronomy, that doesn't change much at all. This is enough for the morning. # # # 2019-10-06 20AD T352 The Optics Rush was the play for this map. I encountered Stalin a few turns back and neither one of us had Alphabet at the time, so we couldn't trade. It doesn't matter now that I have Alphabet, as he doesn't like me enough to Trade. I will be doing some serious Tech backfilling prior to getting Astronomy. So, that's looking more like a T500 goal. But one never knows. So far, I've discovered three totally unsettled major islands. So, things are looking good for when I get Astronomy. I don't know if there is such a thing as an Explorer Economy. But I am banking some serious coin popping Huts. Well, I exaggerate. But it certainly is paying for my Explorer's Supply. I'll have to kill a bunch of Explorers and Caravels once I am done Exploring. # # # T355: And that's it on the night. Three of my Cities are Building Research. And there is loads of Land out there for the taking. # # # 2019-10-08 200AD T370 So, I think I made this map way too big. Anyway, we'll see what becomes of it. Right now, I'm getting quite the advantage from Popping all those Huts. I'm not keeping track, but it's enabling me to run Research at 100% in lieu of 40%. I think I'm a shoe-in to be the first to Astronomy, which will give me a boost on the Settlement Rush. I don't have a game plan for that. But it's a good couple of days away. Likely, I'll Build Gold to finance new Cities, so as to Settle as much as I can. Size is Power, after all. And from there, I'll likely go on the War Path. That was the initial plan, after all. Things are looking good. # # # 2019-10-08 359AD T385 I Popped Astronomy. True, I'd researched maybe half of it. But Popping the other half from a Hut was pretty darn sweet. Now, I'm off to build a bunch of Galleons and Settlers. Hopefully, with the Trans Continental Trade and Four Trade Routes Each, the Cities will pay for themselves from Turn One. # # # 2019-10-08 420AD T392 Well, I played some more. Four Settlers and Two Galleons are in production. It is time to REX... or at least, RMX {Rapid Middle Expansion, as opposed to Rapid Early Expansion}. # # # 2019-10-09 500AD T400 Right now, I have Open Borders with Everyone. And so far, if anyone has asked for a Technology, I have given it to them. I don't know if that will last. I am starting my Post Astronomy Settlement Campaign. The first City is Settled next Turn. Building Settlers and Workers will be the limiting factor. I will get 8+ Commerce from Trade Routes alone from each City, so they should pay for themselves from day one. I am Researching Gunpowder; and from there, Steel. I'll launch my first Attack around that time... or not. I don't see much point in wasting time building an Army when I can Settle Land for free. Of course, others might want to challenge me. But that's a good reason to Declare War on whoever gets Astronomy first. The Map is almost completely revealed. The Hut Popping is nearing the end. I've gotten tons of Technologies and Gold from Huts, making them supremely valuable. # # # T401: I am smack dab in the middle as far as size goes. # # # 2019-10-09 600AD T420 I continue to Settle the Free Islands. I am the clear Tech Leader. I cannot tell whether Bismark has Optics or not. Certainly, no one else has Astronomy. It will be awhile before I have any competition. At which point, the game will likely be over. Really, the most important thing at this point is to remember not to Research Corporations so The Great Lighthouse isn't sunk. A new City runs at over 50% profit, yielding upwards of 7 Commerce. Yeah, knowing that Astronomy is key on a Map like this is a big advantage. # # # 2019-10-10 625AD T425 Bismark has Optics and is making contact with the others. So far, he's only met one other, but he'll get to the rest soon enough. His popularity is through the roof. He got a +3 with Hammurabi, just because. # # # 2019-10-10 650AD T430 The Settlement is slow going. The islands are miles away. A 100x100 Map is much larger than I envisioned. Oh, well. I am the Tech Leader. Only Bismark has Optics. I'm 13 Turns away from Gunpowder. At which point, I should... well, I won't. REX is the play for now. And when I can no longer do that. I will fight a War of Capitulation. # # # 2019-10-11 715AD T443 I just Researched Gunpowder. Settling has been fun. And perhaps, the conquest will be fun, as well. On the other hand, the game is over. The new and improved BAT AI was not up to the challenge. The game has been a rout. Yeah, sure. I had to reload a few times... or decided to. But the competition is not there. Still, as a game of solitaire, it is on par with playing with Legos. Score: 774 Normalized: 61,116 I am in second place behind Rome. Rome has built a lot of Wonders. Rome is on the other side of the board. Lucky for Rome. Finally, I'm sending a Worker with each Settler when I set my Galleons to sail in search of foreign lands to Settle. That Worker is better used chopping out a Library than anything else. Libraries being my Cultural Building of choice. # # # 2019-10-12 750AD T450 I doubt that I will go to War prior to Researching Cannons. And since then I will have to Build a Stack of Cannons, I doubt I will go to War right away. I am still the Tech Leader. But that may not last. For whatever reason, the AI is able to Grow its Cities Taller. Germany is not going out of his way to explore the world. Rome got Optics, but has not met anyone else, yet. Neither Germany nor Rome has Astronomy. So, I have a few more turns (call it fifty) of Settling the good stuff first. After Steel, I will go for Scientific Method and attempt to sweep the Post Science Bonus Techs. We'll see how that goes. Of course, I am running 40% Science on the Slider, which isn't so bad considering the number of Cities I have. But Rome (and to a lesser extent Germany) looks like an up and comer. They could surpass me. Germany is gearing up for War. It is safe to assume I am the target. On the other hand, that is 50 Turns off due to his lack of Astronomy. As it stands, everyone is Pleased with me. So, Peace might be the better alternative. Still, one can't go wrong being ready for a War. # # # 2019-10-12 755AD T451 Take note! Civilizations by Power: Dutch Russia Rome German Me Korea Babylonian # # # T455: Bismark spun off Greece as an Independent State; and conveniently, Alexander has agreed to become a Vassal of Germany. # # # T484: Korea has Capitulated at the cost of 3 Musketeers. The Combat Odds Display on this Mod Sucks. I have to Right Click Hold -> Hover Over Unit -> Hit Shift. It's annoying. Thankfully, this will be a short game... or so I believe. Based on that one glitch, I expect to delete this Mod Long Term. # # # 2019-10-12 925AD T485 The War with Korea was amazingly short. I mean, I knew they would Capitulate. And in truth, I thought Wang would Capitulate after loosing his first City. But still, it went smooth and effortless. I suppose, the complete lack of a Counter Attack adds to the feeling of smooth sailing. Stalin is next. I'm not sure how many turns the attack is off. But it is coming soon. Actually, he has almost no defensive units. It will be soon. I don't think he has the force for a Counter Attack. # # # T493: I Declared War on Stalin and landed a small stack of Muskets. Hopefully, Stalin will decimate his forces trying to wipe them out. His best Unit is an Elephant, which is going to be hard pressed against a Musket on Defence in a Forest. # # # T494: I suffered heavy casualties... very heavy casualties... game changing casualties. Russia killed all 11 of my Troops. It matters little that I killed 19 of his. I will be rolling back and trying a different angle of attack. # # # T496: I landed on the tip of Russia, took the easy City and am Fortifying against the imminent Counter Attack. At which point, I'll regroup and decide what to do. I lose the Forest Defensive Bonus. But I gain the use of my Garrison Promotions... and more options in whether to play Offence or Defence. We'll see how it goes. But I do believe it will be better for me. Most of his troops do not have Defensive Bonuses. And my stack is taller still... 13 Troops in lieu of 11. # # # T498: My Troops were Repulsed by Stalin, again. I will need more Troops. It is as simple as that. His Elephants, which I may have enabled, are simply stronger (and more numerous than I had any idea). # # # 2019-10-13 1000AD T500 Having been Repulsed (and Reloaded) twice, I am going to take 25 Turns to prepare for my War with Stalin. It is entirely possible I will eat Russia whole. All of his Cities lay on the Coast. And he has two nice Shrines. One of the mistakes I made in my Attack was landing with a stack consisting solely of Muskets when most of Stalin's force is Elephants and Horsemen. Pikes are Stronger and Cheaper against Mounted Units. So, I am building a bunch of Pikes. As my Galleons return, I will keep them for a massed attack against Russia. Also, I will switch construction to Frigates (in lieu of Galleons) once I land Chemistry to destroy his Coastal Defences. Yes, it is bad that I had to reload twice. Oh, well. Such is the power of Elephants and the need for Pikes. # # # 2019-10-13 1010AD? T501 The Most Advanced Civilizations: Me Caesar Wang Kong Bismark William van Oranje Alexander Hammurabi Stalin # # # 2019-10-13 1025AD T505 No one else has Astronomy, yet. That's the Big Technology, at this point, as it enables Attacking on the Offensive. My Army will set sail on T525, at which point, I should have at least half as many Pikes as Stalin has Elephants. I intend to land en mass. The timing puts the Win further back. And with the decision to Eat Russia Whole (previously, I was anticipating Capitulation), the War will last a while. I doubt I will be in a position to Attack anyone else prior to T575. So, if all goes well by T600 I will have three enemies under my belt. I think I will call my Colonial Days over. I can only run 20% Science. I'm currently running 30%, but that's deficit spending from my Korean Campaign. Still, I am interested in this game, which is something. Score: 1,301 Normal: 99,533 # # # T515: I am jumping the gun and launching my Attack on Russia 10 Turns earlier than I said I would with 28 Troops, including 9 Pikes. I will be landing on a Forested Hill, where I shall Camp Out until Stalin Attacks. # # # 2019-10-13 1190AD T538 I am rolling back to Pre Russian Invasion. It is not going well for me. Actually, the worst mistake was due to the crappy Combat Odds in this Mod. I figured I'd just slam my stack into the City and take my lumps. Well, it turns out the game decided my best Attackers were my Pikes. Um, no. Not a chance. Anyway, I'm rolling back to the turn prior to my attack. Interestingly, I believe I was able to Fork Stalin by simply having Frigates Barrage a City. Either way, he never attacked my Hills Forest Encampment... and I lost my focus, doing stupid things. Also, I allowed a Frigate to be Destroy. It's not the end of the world. But it makes Stalin think he is doing something. And the Combat drove up my War Weariness. I should pull back a few Turns on the Reload and Delay the Attack yet again. # # # Maybe, I should just call the game... # # # Yeah, I'm just going to call the game. # # # # # # 2019-10-13 4000BC T0 So, I regenerated the Map until I got to something new... playable... that I liked... whatever. # # # 2019-10-13 1490BC T201 I landed both The Pyramids and The Great Lighthouse (in the opposite order). It may be a mistake, but I am waiting until I Research Iron prior to Settling any Cities. And then, I will sprout a half dozen more Cities... more or less at once. I built a Fishing Boat and used it to Scout my Coast. My land is so big (with no one else on it) that I was starting to get scared that I would meet someone. I have more than enough room to expand. In fact, land is the opposite of being at a premium. I simply cannot support as many Cities as I could build. It may be a mistake to wait until Iron Working prior to Settling anything. And even though that remains my plan, food is far more important than anything else. So, I may just be better off settling before then. I do know that I will Settle the Islands with two Cities rather than three (or four or five) like I normally might. There just isn't the food... and then, maintenance will kill me. Perhaps, I should go for Confucianism. # # # 2019-10-19 1350BC T215 I started Settling my Cities... just the one so far. But I am not waiting for Iron Working. I am going to go down the Island String. # # # T217: I am having a hard time trying to decide what to Research next. I opted for Iron Working... and to quit for the night. # # # 2019-10-14 1160BC T234 The Villagers gave me a Map that showed distant lands a mere hop across the Ocean... reachable by Culturally driven Galleys. It will change by Settlement pattern on that Island. Unfortunately, I did not plan ahead well. And will not have Copper hooked up in time for The Colossus. # # # T271: I Built The Colossus, which likely only happened because I Bulbed Metal Casting. # # # 2019-10-14 550B T295 Tokyo did it's job and exerted its Cultural Control over the Ocean allowing me to continue on continuing on. As such, my Galley and Scout are Exploring new lands. At this point, I am indifferent about meeting others. They cannot get to me, as the AI is not clever enough to search for Crossings. I, also, do not think I will be as rushed to get Optics. One never knows, though. That Explorer Economy was worth several thousand Gold. So, I probably should research that next just to make sure I get it well before anyone else. Researching: Code of Laws (for Courthouses) -> Currency (for the extra Trade Route) -> Optics (for the Explorer Economy) # # # 500BC T300 I have made contact with William van Oranje. I expect to expand in his direction... and the opposite direction. So far, I have 4 Cities and they are very spread out. Of course, that gives me the Different Land Mass Trade Bonus, which more than makes up for the Distance Penalty. This is where I shall quit on the morning. I'm always optimistic at this point. But given my extensive landholdings and the AI's inability to exploit the Map, I believe I will Win handily. Easily 100,000+ in Score. All I need to do is be patient. Plan My Work! and Work My Plan! And not get bogged down by the logistics of shuffling workers and such. My holding are fractured. And they are not going to get any less so. # # # T301: I am last place in size. # # # 2019-10-14 300AD T380 Well, so much for being optimistic. William van Oranje Declared War. The loss of the City is not that important. Of course, does put me behind that many Turns. More importantly, we will never be Friends. So, what's the point? I will replay the same map. I will not Settle on his Island. But I will on the one North. The only Sea Tiles I am Working contain Fish, Crab, or Clams. But I think The Colossus is still worth it. I have a hard time slowing down and taking care of business. I have Fishing Boats that are not working Fish that have been under my Cultural Control for dozens of Turns. I need to get that sort of thing under control. I knew Oranje could plot at Pleased. He might have been Friendly. But he has nothing else to do with his Troops. And there is no way I could fight off that size stack this early in the game. Let's see if I can do this better. # # # # # # 2019-10-14 3715BC T18 I just popped a Scout with my Warrior. I am going to work on the assumption that 'Better Results with a Scout' just means unfavourable results are rerolled. And since I am playing No Barbarians, this advantage is meaningless. I will destroy the Popped Scout. # # # 2019-10-14 1500BC T200 I have 50 Turns or so to get The Colossus. I get a Great Person (Engineer or Merchant) in 18 Turns, either of which I can use to Bulb Metal Casting. So, that is what I shall do. Writing it critical to Spamming, as well. As I want my first Build to be a Library for the Cultural effects. I was seriously thinking about reloading right at about the time I landed the Great Lighthouse, as I can do better... or so, it would feel. But I think most of that is just not knowing where to Settle my Cities. After The Colossus and a Library, it's Galleys, Workers, and Settlers in Kyoto. I say that knowing full well I'll never keep to such a plan. Still, I feel good... or I would have reloaded. Maybe, I should go for Code of Laws, next. Well, it's more than a maybe. After Writing, I'll beeline Code of Laws, bulbing Metal Casting on the way for The Colossus, as I start my REX. # # # 2019-10-14 1090BC T241 The Colossus was built in a Far Away Land. I had not even started. It was a waste of my Great Person. I'm not Kicking It. I'm reloading. I, also, don't have the Food to support The Pyramids. It simply is not worth the Hammer investment. Finally, The Great Lighthouse does not get any bonuses to construction from Stone. So, although I need Masonry, I don't need Stone. Research: Sailing -> Mining -> Masonry -> Pottery Build Cottages over Farms. -------- In Short: The Great Lighthouse No Pyramids No Colossus Actually, The Colossus will probably be quite important, so build it The Colossus Cottages Not Farms 50% Slider Cities Faster -------- The Great Lighthouse The Colossus Confucianism Cottages REX EARLY -> 50% Research # # # # # # Start of the -06 Game # # # # # # 2019-10-16 1500BC T100 It looks to be a smooth start. Since The Great Lighthouse is not benefited by Stone (odd how I didn't realize this before), the optimum path puts Sailing before Masonry, so one can Build a Lighthouse while researching Masonry. I am now Researching Pottery. After which, I shall build a few Cottages to increase my Research Rate, while Researching Bronze Working. I'll use the Great Merchant 150 Turns hence to Bulb Metal Casting. Hmmm. I won't get my Great Merchant in time to Bulb Metal Casting for The Colossus. I only have 150 Turns. I don't have any information on Confucianism. But I am going to guess it lands at about the same time. I am going to conclude The Colossus is worth more to me. At half cost with Bronze, which I will have, it costs 375 Hammers, which means it pays for itself in 100T with only 4 Sea Tiles worked. I will be working more than 4 Sea Tiles. And Astronomy, the Obsoleting Technology is well over 100 Turns away... more like 200. As such, I will build The Colossus and forgo Confucianism. Last game, Oranje Founded Confucianism, so maybe I can trade him for it. # # # 2019-10-16 990BC T251 I am pleased with my start. Aren't I always. I am now to the place in my plan where I have more options; and so, tend to flounder. The Great Lighthouse is in. The Colossus is in. Somebody Built The Pyramids without me noticing. I only mention this as I was thinking about making a note about how I could go for The Pyramids. But I cannot. The plan is to pick up Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, so I can work a few more tiles; and then, get Currency through Mathematics (for the extra Trade Route), prior to Researching Optics. Scouting the Unknown Lands is simply worth too much to let someone else get Optics first. We are talking of 25-50 Huts. That represents several Free Technologies. I have been running Research at 80%. I'm not quite sure. Something about pulling my own weight. But the 1000 Odd Gold I have in reserve represents a Technology. I should cash that in as soon as possible. # # # 2019-10-17 500BC T300 I don't know what I expect out of 50 Turns at this stage of the game. It's slow going and not much seems to be happening. I have two Settlers in production... one of which, is going up north, to land on the Dutch Outlier Island. I'm not Custom Naming my Cities, as there doesn't seem to be much point. I'll land Optics by T400 (I hope), which is a good 50 Turns later than my first go at this sort of map. I killed a Scout or two early on. I might regret that when it comes time to Explore. I'll, also, regret expanding towards Oranje if he should decide to attack. # # # 2019-10-22 320AD T382 I do not feel as far ahead as I did the first game. In another 50 Turns (OK, maybe 100 Turns), it will not matter if Oranje attacks. I have Optics on him, which means I have Caravels versus his Galleys and Triremes. I have three of my own Triremes defending our border. And in time, those will change to Caravels. In the meantime, he keeps on sending his stack of Galleys towards my lands, but never breaking the border. I believe he could if he wanted. On the other hand, I believe the critical Ocean Tiles are slowly coming under my control. I just discovered that Stalin lies to the immediate north, as I am able to gift one of my Cities to him. I will not be doing that. Nor will I liberate any. They are worth too much down the road. I am backfilling the cheap Religious Technologies, as I build my exploratory fleet. If I am lucky enough to Pop a Technology, I'd much rather get an expensive one. I do believe Civil Service is the next major Technology I will Research. # # # 2019-10-22 380AD T388 William van Oranje did attack and took over a City. It's enough for a restart. I do not like this MOD. It's less than the BUG MOD. So, even if I wanted to play this map again... I would not play using the Better BAT AI Mod. These are good configurations if I want to play an Isolated Start, however. # # # # # # 2010-10-22 GAME OVER # # # # # # (c) 2019-10-22 Brett Paufler
